KUALA LUMPUR (23 May 2010) – With over 200 golf courses around the country and hot and sunny weather all year round, golf is a game enjoyed by Malaysians throughout the year.

The quest, to hone the skills of a local golfer so that he or she reaches the pinnacle of the sport competing with the world’s best and winning international tournaments to put Malaysia on the world map, is a continuing one which involves the Government, golfing bodies and private firms.

As part of this grand plan, the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Golf Challenge 2010 with its unique tagline “In search of the Malaysian Tiger” will be held at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club from June 25 to 27.

The format will be based on individual stroke play with 100 of the best junior talent from around the country invited to participate. There will be a cut after the first two days with the top 60 players plus ties, “in search of Malaysian Tiger”. There will be a number of age group categories for the event this year with both local and overseas golf scholarships awaiting the winners.

“We are delighted to be moving this year’s event to Glenmarie and building on the success and reputation the tournament has gained in recent years” said Jamil Haron, TSM Tournament Chairman. “Our patron and avid supporter of junior sports development, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin will also be present during the tournament to lend support and encouragement to all competitors” added Jamil.

This year all players will be given complimentary stay at the Holiday Inn Glenmarie for the duration of the event, just like the setting of a real professional tournament. The complimentary stay includes all meals and facilities. This allows fellow competitors to relax and focus on the tournament.

MST Golf has been assigned as the event management company for TSM Challenge 2010. Invitations will be sent out according to MGA rankings by early May.

• Event: Appreciation dinner at Petaling Jaya Hilton to honour contributors, donors and supporters of TSMCG. YB Dato’ Seri Azalina bt Othman Said (then) Minister of Youth and Sports, was guest-of-honour.

• Golf: Golf friendly with Malaysian parliamentarians at the Mines Resort & Golf Club.

• Three advisors were appointed to TSMCG Council: YB Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohd Khir Toyo, YBhg Tan Sri Shamsuddin bin Abdul Kadir and YBhg Tan Sri Abdul Rahim bin Mohammad.

• YBhg Dato’ Seri Hj Megat Najmuddin bin Dato’ Seri Dr. Hj Megat Khas took over TSMCG presidency.

• Tan Sri Muhyiddin Charity Golf was formed to promote charity through golfing.

In the five years since, TSMCG has successfully organised fund-rising golf events at home and abroad, in particular Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia, where the money raised thereof were utilised in aid of needy Malaysian students studying in these three countries.

Others who have also benefited from TSMCG numerous charity drives thus far include victims of natural disasters, homes for elderly, the infirmed and the destitute, orphanages and underprivileged children.

The year 2008 sees TSMCG embarking on yet another mission – to raise enough funds to set up dialysis center offering much needed treatment (either for free or at a nominal cost) to deserving patient.

ON THE TIGER’S TRAIL

TSMCG is also committed to developing the game of golf among talented Malaysian youngsters. It feels the need to create a pool of new generation golfers whose talents can be professionally honed to excel at international level.

This is in view of the current scenario where many Asian golfers are taking the golf world by storm, with countries like Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan and Thailand churning out world-class players like never before.

The search for home-grown young “Tigers” began in earnest in 2006 when TSMCG, working in tandem with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) and the Malaysian Ladies Golf Association (MALGA), organised a threee-day tournament for budding talents between 12 and 25 years old.

The encouraging response to the inaugural tournament, from 60 participants in 2006 to 120 the following year, has promted TSMCG to turn this event into a permanent feature of the organisation. It has since recieved MGA’s official sanction and is now officially listed in MGA annual calendar events.
